So, I'm having a beer at my desk and not working very hard. Is Friday over yet?

Work

I just had my annual performance review here at work, and apparently I'm still employed. It was just me and Vice-President of Getting Shit Done, as the Vice-President of Very Important Things is off on vacation. She went off without adjusting my salary as agreed, so I'm a little miffed. Now, yet another meeting must be scheduled so we can put that issue to rest, too. Which is great. I mean, who doesn't love meetings?

Also, the VP of GSD is pregnant, so while she's on mat leave a certain amount of her responsibilities will devolve to the VP of VIT, effectively making her my manager for a year. Seeing as we don't get on very well, that should prove to be...interesting.

The VP of VIT claims I am too "sassy."

If my salary issue isn't resolved to my satisfaction next week I promise you she'll see just how sassy I can really be.

Meanwhile, the President of the United States of Paycheques wandered into the studio this morning to check up on a project we've been putting together, only to wonder about the content. This is a strange thing to wonder about since I took him through the storyboard frame by frame before production began. Sometimes it can be hard to have a chat with your boss without saying something damagingly frank like, "Are you retarded?"

"It's great work," he said, "it's just not what I was expecting."

So now we have to start again. Oh, joy.

Word in the corridors is there's free pizza in the kitchen. Excuse me while I go to snag a slice.

Home

I remember when weekends were more relaxing than the week. This kind of differentiation is no longer possible. I have too many children.

Web

Can anyone recommend a decent webhost? Surfing the net has not helped -- consumers only review webhosts when they're pissed off, so going by the critiques it seems like every host sucks balls.

I'm looking for SSH access, control over sub-domains, and a bandwidth quota no lower than 500 GB/mo. I'm currently at Canada Web Hosting, and have been looking to move to 1&1 but I've been made nervous by some very negative reports.

Can anyone steer me in a better direction?

Writing

I'm putting out 12,000 words a week, continuously. Is it making me a better writer? I fucking hope so, because it's making me a very tired one.

I've collected the last year of output into an anthology entitled Hot Buttered Something: Collected Stories Volume I. If you enjoy my brand of imaginative and profane drivel, please consider picking up a copy. Buy six for your friends.

Today I hate everything I write. Some days are like that. I need a solid sleep before I can hit the keyboard again.

Driving

Did you read Slozo's diary? Seven fucking hour commute on Tuesday. I think I have post-traumatic stress syndrome now. Extra thanks go to Slozo for rescuing me when the Mini overheated just past midnight while it was -30 C outside.

How's by you?

I thought Stacky worked in Texas? Or does she telecommute?

All webhosts suck. Some just suck less.

Ever been to a Sci-fi con?

Lately, at work, I've been so bored I've taken to trolling slashdot, k5, and slozo.

No SciFi Cons In My Past. by CheeseburgerBrown (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri Mar 09, 2007 at 03:22:11 PM EST
But possibly in my future -- Unit B is threatening to force me to go to one in Toronto this summer.

. . . you're bragging about having been at a sci-fi convention?

Funny story, at least.

with going to a sci-fi convention?

Absolutley nothing, as long as you don't . . . by slozo (4.00 / 2) #12 Fri Mar 09, 2007 at 03:51:30 PM EST
. . . wear a costume; are completely and utterly socially inept; still live with your parents past the age of 30; stutter, blush and pee yourself when talking to the opposite sex; have never had sex (not for religious reasons either)(over the age of 25); know the names of James T. Kirk's wives; get 80% or more of the humour exchanged there.

Because then, it would definitely be uncool.

And slozo is too easy to troll, I suspect his irony levels are deficient and he needs a cynicism transplant.

1&1 ... by BlueOregon (4.00 / 1) #7 Fri Mar 09, 2007 at 03:23:10 PM EST

... I have no hosting experience with them.

They were, though, my rather hated DSL provider when I lived in Berlin. A decent number of horror stories ... but other than that, I cannot comment upon their hosting service.

I feel, you see, that Friday is a Zombie. My brain has been consumed. The offices were dead.

If The Web's Collaborative Voice Can Be Trusted... by CheeseburgerBrown (2.00 / 0) #25 Fri Mar 09, 2007 at 06:14:03 PM EST
...which it can't, but if it could then it would seem like 1&1 started out as a decent host but has since outsourced their support to Brazilian street children or something so customers tend to get irate when trying to get to the bottom of unexpected outages or changes in service.

pissed off yet again.

the grass people called at 9:45am to see if i was home, because they were coming to deliver the new sod.  it's now 2:40pm, and they have not showed up.  "the driver is running a bit behind"  REALLY?

a dude at work hosed his box.  i had to try to talk his entire non-unix team through getting it back up.  they couldnt' even figure out how to boot the laptop console.  *sigh*  i told them the problem was too big, and i'll have to do it monday.  it will take me less than 15 minutes.

same group at work is talking about upgrading a server without including me.  WTF?  they can't even boot a freaking laptop.  this is going to get ugly.

i need a drink.  damn baby!

to ask my boss if he's retarded, but it'd get me fired. can i hire you to do it instead?

i bought a copy, btw...i read it as it was posted, but i thought that nick would prefer it in dead tree. he likes. if i venture north again sometime soonish, i'll bring it up for you to put marker all over. it'll join its brothers on the shelf of "things by authors i've actually met."

I just couldn't bring myself to offer the pre-autographed option this time, as it just about killed me last time. Too much!

Naturally I'd be pleased to sign yours at the earliest convenience.

ordered one, too, just because it pleases me to have a shelf of books written by people I know. I'm gonna read the stories I missed in their serial release, too, of course.

Speaking of which, we finally got around to framing the studies you made for the paintings you sent us, Permeable Membrane and A Fine Tradition of Brain Farming. They'll be going up on the wall over the piano Real Soon Now.

Thanks. About the paintings: as a historical footnote you should know they represent my final paint-based commission, as everything that follows has been purely digital.

It's placed so that you can't see it until you step inside.  I scares people.  It scares them more when I tell them it was based on your perceptions of what my job can be like.

The wall they can see most easily has fish my children colored jumping off the fabric pin-board and up the wall.  It lures them in to see what else I have, and then... wham Permeable Membrane.

I'm sneaky that way.

First chapters tend to be shorter (less than 2,000 words), but final chapters tend to be phat.

"How's by you?" by duxup (2.00 / 0) #29 Wed Mar 14, 2007 at 03:22:01 PM EST
I am well.

If I could I'd take the kids for a weekend to allow you and your wife to relax.  More accurately the wife (former nanny, loves kids, kids are drawn to her like a magnet) would take the kids.  I would just get tired watching.

Your previous post noted the new little one won’t do ASL.  The a local pair of twins that my wife and I see often have one little one that loves to do ASL and seems thrilled that it can communicate with everyone.  The other little one shows zero interest in it.  Odd, and yet totally fascinating.  I would think any little one would jump at the chance to communicate.  Then again they don't think quite like we do.
